“The idea for an “Oola Jedi” originally came from a comic book. After seeing Jan Foster’s cover illustration for a Star Wars comic book, George Lucas was so struck by the image of a blue Twi’lek Jedi that he decided to add the character to Attack of the Clones. At the time, Attack of the Clones was already in post-production and Costume Supervisor Gillian Libbert only had two weeks to construct the costume. With over-the-phone guidance from Costume Designer Trisha Biggar and input from George Lucas, Libbert gathered together extra fabric and created Aayla’s costume. In the end, even fabric from Jar Jar’s leather vest was used. With Libbert’s costume and four hours of make-up, ILM Production Assistant Amy Allen became Aayla Secura. With the character’s subsequent popularity, Aayla Secura was also used in Revenge of the Sith.”

I’m really incredibly grateful for this post. I’m glad to see someone shining a light on abusive relationships in writing and literature. As a former member of Young Adults Against Dating Abuse in high school, the glorified, glossed over abusive relationships in novels really disturbs me. What disturbs me more is how easy it is to fall into the trap of finding these relationships romantic - I know from experience in reading novels. But having been trained in domestic abuse prevention and aid, spoken with domestic abuse victims and helped friends out of abusive relationships I must emphasize what the writer says here:

“It is scary as hell out there and if you are going to write this kind of relationship you have to go for it 100%. You can not dilute or gloss over how horrible it is. You have to make it very clear that this is not romantic, it is not sweet, it is abusive and this kind of guy may love you forever, but he will probably also destroy you in the mean time.”

I saw a post about mothers crying that had over six million notes. Why the fuck doesn’t this have just as many? One of my best friends was raped. He told her that she was gay because she hadn’t had a guy fuck her properly. There’s no excuse for rape, and there’s no excuse for people who say this shit about/to rape victims.

I may be a guy, but I’m a feminist. Feminism isn’t just about supporting women. It’s about supporting equality — no matter what race, religion, sexuality, or gender you are. No woman should be talked down to like this. But the saddest thing about rape? It’s never seen as a tragedy to the general public. There’s always some sort of justification for rape, and it’s sickening.

And I know I include rape in my role plays, but I do it because I don’t romanticize it. I know what rape is. It’s a filthy, disgusting, power-hungry thing. It’s not sexy. It never has been, and it never will be.

So fuck anyone who supports rape, and fuck anyone who made a comment like this to any man or woman. No one should be thankful for this shit. No one.

This makes my heart hurt. :(

Spot in Vöcklabruck by Westpol architects.

Westpol architects created this wonderfully picturesque spot in Vöcklabruck, Austria where visitors are able to sit in the middle of a pond without getting wet. The scenic landscape includes a path leading down to a hollowed out circular area where people can take a seat and relax amongst nature. It’s a surreal journey along the gradual ramp to the observational platform as the water level gains height either side. Once in the resting area, depending on perspective, visitors seem like they’re wading in the lake without a drop of water on them.
